The Heads of State of the five members East African Community (EAC) have signed a pact A pact establishing a single market within the region.

The signing of the protocol lays strong foundations for a new East Africa of common interests and aspirations. During the signing ceremony at the Arusha International Conference, the EAC leaders praised the spirit of unity and commitment to a shared future by removing the superficial borders that have separated the member States.

The Heads of State welcomed the Common Market Protocol as the beginning of a new dawn for the region whose first attempt at forming a federation collapsed spectacularly on its 10th anniversary in 1977.  Speaking during the ceremony Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame noted that  "It is now upon East Africans  to accelerate the pace as the vision of the full integration is now within reach.”  The negotiations for the protocol began in earnest in April 2008.
