About Kenya

Kenya is a sovereign East African nation straddling the equator, bordered by the Indian Ocean to the southeast. Known globally as the "Cradle of Humanity" for its rich paleontological history, Kenya is today a vibrant, modern democracy that blends deep-rooted traditions with rapid innovation. From the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya to the pristine coral reefs of the coast, the country offers a microcosm of Africa's breathtaking diversity.

Covering approximately 582,646 km², Kenya's landscapes range from the geological marvel of the Rift Valley and its flamingo-lined lakes, to the Highlands home of Mount Kenya (5,199m) — Africa's second-highest peak and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — to the historic Swahili coast at Mombasa and Lamu, and the vast semi-arid Arid North.

With over 54 million people across more than 50 distinct ethnic groups, Kenya is a rich cultural tapestry, with Swahili and English as official languages and "Harambee" (pulling together) as its national philosophy.

Nairobi is East Africa's economic and technological hub, known as the "Silicon Savannah" — home to M-Pesa, the mobile money platform that transformed global financial inclusion. Kenya and Ireland enjoy warm, historic diplomatic relations established shortly after Kenya's independence in 1963, with growing cooperation in agricultural technology, pharmaceuticals, and professional services, and a vibrant Kenyan diaspora enriching Irish healthcare, tech, academia, and the arts.
